Surgical Safety Checklist in Libya

Abstract

Surgery was defined as “any procedure occurring in the operating room involving the incision, excision, manipulation or suturing of tissue that usually requires regional or general anesthesia or profound sedation to control pain”. It was recognized that in surgery, there is no single remedy that would change safety. Safety in surgery requires the reliable execution of multiple necessary steps in care, not just by the surgeon but by a team of health- care professionals working together for the benefit of the patient. The WHO Global burden of disease report in 2002 showed that a significant proportion of the disability from disease in the world is due to conditions that are treatable by the surgical intervention.
